Computer Access: Now More Than Ever

We may have a lot of computers in our library but that doesn’t mean everyone can come right in and sit down and use one. Shortly after we open at 10 a.m. there are often more people needing computer than there are computers.

Some people wonder why we provide computers for the public at no charge. Aren’t government agencies in the business of charging people for services?

Some are, but libraries have always been places where people can get information and enjoyable reading materials for free. We have computers because people need them: 67 per cent of public libraries are the only provider of free public access to computers and the Internet (according to a 2010 technology access study).

Especially in this economy, libraries play a huge role in any potential economic recovery. Look at the evidence to see why: three quarters of job seekers use the Internet to seek employment. The majority of companies do their recruiting online.

Many people coming to the library are first-time computer users. They learn how to use a mouse, how to open an email account and how to do an online job search after just a few sessions with a library aide or volunteer. These one-on-one sessions provided by library staff are free if you have a library card.

Library computer labs were an exception just a few years ago. Now 89 per cent of public libraries offer formal or informal IT training in state-of-the-art computer labs. With the growth of multimedia applications on potential employers sites—recruitment videos, podcasts, flash animation— even more skills are needed.

Books are still available, although book budgets are slim right now. Libraries also have magazines and feature films and documentaries on DVD. The next time you drop by, take some time to look around. You’ll see lots of people of all ages and economic backgrounds doing a variety of things using both print resources and technology. That’s what we’re here for.
